The village is postcard New England–clapboard, picturesque and historic. Some of the finest whaling ships in the world were built here during the heyday of the whaling industry. Shipyard Park at the village center commemorates a time when some 400 men worked the yards and the bowsprits of mighty vessels shrouded the roadways.
