Nantucket, MA
Whaling dominates both the history and current mystique of this far-flung and naturally barren sea island of Nantucket. From as far back as the 1700s Nantucket was known as the whaling capitol of the world. Moby Dick was published in 1851 after Melville came to Nantucket before the whaling boom in 1830. Hundreds of people from all walks of life worked the rope walks, candle factories, chandleries and sail lofts of this tiny Industrial island. The last whaling ship left Nantucket in 1869. Local author Nathanial Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea summed up the history and intensity of the whaling industry quite poetically and is a must read. It didn't take long for tourism to thrive on this wind-swept island where today it is the principal source of income for island residents.
