Groton, CT
Revolutionary War buffs may want to visit Fort Griswold, the site of the 1781 massacre of American defenders by British troops led by Benedict Arnold.
Today, the site includes ramparts, battlements and buildings dating from the Revolution as well as a 134-foot granite monument to the defenders you can climb.
Visit the Monument House Museum located in the state park (57 Fort St., 860-449-6877) for the full story of the battle. Admission is free. The Fort is located south of the bridges in Groton.
