Mackinac Island, MI
Mackinac Island is north of Bois Blanc Island in Lake Huron and covers 3.8 square miles. Over 80 percent of Mackinac Island is within Mackinac Island State Park. Rent a bike at one of the many local bike shops along the waterfront to pedal the 8-mile-long trip around Mackinac Island or take a horse and buggy tour.
Other favored activities include touring Fort Mackinac or Fort Holmes, hiking to Arch Rock and strolling around the luxurious Grand Hotel. Several downtown buildings are National Historic Landmarks because of the town’s activity during the American Revolution. Today it is home to military reenactments, bugle and drum corps music, and rifle and cannon demonstrations.
An annual favorite event for boaters is the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac held in July. The race has been an annual event since 1909.
