Boating Destinations near the Little Traverse Bay, MI
Harbor Springs is built around the scenic harbor, and natural Artesian springs bubble up in drinking fountains all over town. Over the years its well-sheltered deep-water port (more than 250 feet in the harbor) has afforded Native American settlement, fur trading, logging, passenger ships and lake freighters. Now a second home and tourism community, its popularity with recreational boaters makes this an easy port to find what you need, from repair services to boating events and camaraderie. The Little Traverse Sailors is a non-profit organization that teaches sailing June-August and plays a vital role in the area's sailboat racing community. Watch (and watch out for) the LTS boats and junior sailors.
Main Street is a block from the marina, where you'll find everything from ice cream and fudge to high-end art, jewelry, and clothing. On Thursday evenings, Street Musique brings musicians to outdoor venues throughout the downtown. Contact the Chamber of Commerce for the latest on downtown events (231-526-7999) or go to Visit Harbor Springs online.
Want to get away from the crowds? The kid-friendly City Beach sits in the fully-protected west end of the harbor. The Point's sandy bottom and steep drop-off allows boats of all sizes to beach for swimming and picnics.
