Severn River (Annapolis Harbor), MD

Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy overlook the entrance to the Severn River, marked by the Navy’s three tall naval communication towers on the north shore. Annapolis isn’t just shorthand for the Naval Academy, however, as it makes the bold claim of “Sailing Capital of America.” (Newport, RI, contests that claim but is far enough away that it isn’t necessary to take sides.)

Annapolis Harbor has two main boating centers: Back Creek, the province of the “Maritime Republic of Eastport,” and Spa Creek, the heart of downtown Annapolis. These creeks have an abundance of excellent boatyards and many award-winning restaurants.
