James River, VA
In 1607, a band of English colonists followed what is now the James upriver and founded Jamestown, the New World’s first permanent English settlement. The James River has been one of Virginia’s most important waterways ever since. The lower river is busy with sail and powerboats and more and more recreational boats are joining the freighters that ply the waters to Richmond. Some take side trips up to the Chickahominy and Appomattox Rivers to view the sites of some of America’s most important historic events.
