For boats that draw no more than 5 feet and can take the occasional short, hard chop of shallow water, the Inside (ICW) Route on the bay side provides a relatively well protected and interesting passage option to Islamorada, Marathon and beyond to Key West.
This route is clearly marked; however, for certain stretches the markers are far apart and careful attention is required to stay in the controlled channel.
The inside route gives boaters access to popular Key Largo and the famous Everlades National Park backcountry. Take a dinghy or kayak trip to explore the area's beautiful mangrove tunnels.
