Carved out of the spindly Door County Peninsula, the Ship Canal was built to allow freighter access into Green Bay without having to navigate the shoal-ridden Ports Des Morts (“Death’s Door”) Passage at the northern tip of the peninsula.
For the fleet of cruising boats on Lake Michigan, it offers easy and safe entry into the confines of Green Bay’s protected waters. Learn more about this area at the Door County Maritime Museum (920-743-5958) with exhibits featuring the rich history of Sturgeon Bay shipbuilding.
