Portage Lake is a beautiful 2,200-acre body of water with minimal boat traffic compared to other harbors on the Lake Michigan shoreline. This extremely clear and relatively deep lake, lined with summer cottages and homes, measures about 3 miles long by 0.5 mile wide with one large bay on the north shore.

Many people come to Ludington year round for recreation including boating and swimming on Lake Michigan, Hamlin Lake and other smaller inland lakes, as well as hunting, fishing and camping. Rent a bike at Trailhead Bike Shop at 216 W. Ludington Ave. (231-845-0545) to explore nearby Ludington State Park (which includes the Big Sable Point Light), Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness and Manistee National Forest.
The seasonal Friday Night Live is held weekly in downtown Ludington. Free street fair offers live music, games and activities. Food vendors on hand for purchases.
