Most people know Hilton Head Island for its red and white striped lighthouse, a popular photo op, but this is also a great family getaway with walking and bicycle-friendly trails through well-preserved natural areas. The Island is known for its beautiful beaches, including Coligny Beach Park, which has beachfront shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. There are several large grocery stores for provisioning and more shopping at Shelter Cove Harbour at Palmetto Dunes, The Village at Wexford and along William Hilton Parkway (Hwy. 278). Hilton Head is also home to more than 30 golf courses, including some of the best in the country.
Nearby Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to a variety of wildlife including alligators, turtles and birds and has several trails for hiking and biking. (Transportation required.)
