Entering Great Kills Harbor immediately reminds you of a picturesque, New England harbor. Its deep water and almost completely landlocked basin is very secure, offering an ideal spot to plan your visit to New York City. The harbor is 3.5 square miles in area and is surrounded by marinas to the north, marsh to the east, beach to the west and the Gateway National Recreation Area to the south. The Gateway National Recreation area has a beautiful swimming beach, bathhouse and snack bar. You will also find nature trails, great fishing and multi-use paths for walking and jogging on the 523 acres. Kayak lessons and guided tours are offered during July and August at Gateway National Recreational Area (718-980-6130).
Great Kills offers excellent, efficient, public transportation to the “City,” with both express buses and the Staten Island Ferry leading to the New York City subway system.
