We were there in 2015 and anchored "under the guns" for 3 nights.

We dingy'd due west of the anchorage and found the passage through the reeds to the La Chute River. We then were able to travel to the town of Ticonderoga. After passing under the covered foot bridge, you come to the beautiful falls. Immediately to the right is a town dock.

There was a local boater who's mission was to keep the La Chute River clear and navigable. They did a great job as we never hit anything or bumped into anything. Clear water too.

A short walk, even for me and I'm disabled, into town and lots of nice "Mom and Pop" eateries.

It was a $5 taxi ride to the Fort, where they had the most fantastic home made mixed berry pie! We bought a whole pie and took it back to the boat.

Overall a great adventure and worthwhile stop.

Switch to Satellite View to see the La Chute River.

Although this is a popular and historic spot, it has some real disadvantages. Weed growth is very heavy, and under still conditions mosquitoes can be a nightmare. The decent anchoring spots are exposed to wakes, which can be considerable from large power boats. It can be crowded on popular weekends. Access to the town of Ticonderoga, theoretically possible, involves a fairly long walk. There tends to be a lot of cannon shooting on certain weekends, which is nice if you favor that sort of thing, but not so good if you're catching an afternoon nap. It is also an area to keep a sharp eye on one depth sounder, at it ones from deep enough to stuck in the mud in a hurry. However, if you wish to experience a real piece of colonial history, the location is hard to beat.
