Morgans Bluff

Description:
Morgan’s Bluff is a favorite stop for cruisers looking for a sheltered spot to stop and rest enroute to Nassau or the Exumas. It is also a port of entry and over the years it has gained a reputation of being an informal, sand-between-the-toes sort of place where clearing in was a laid back formality treated as important and necessary, but without urgency.
The anchorage is quite large, but there are only a few places where holding is adequate. There is good protection from east northeast through southwest but exposed to all other directions. When the wind shifts to the west or north the entire anchorage is transformed into a washtub of confused waves that in winds over 20 knots can cause well set anchors to drag. If there is any hint of a cold front you should either leave the area entirely or move into the public dock inside the basin space permitting.

We get to this anchorage after our crossing from Bimini so we came from the west. The access to this location requires you to make a north approach to avoid the coral reefs and rock that are in the way from the west approach. The holding is good and the place is a nice. It is a bit loud at time because they have a commercial facility on the shore that brings barges and ferry and they were doing work on the east shore when we where there but as soon as the sun goes down, the place become quiet and we slept well there. Ideal for a protection from south wind. There is plenty of water, we anchored in 14 foo of water right in the middle of the bay.

There is a thin layer of sand over a hard bottom so it is difficult to find a spot with deep enough sand for good holding.

This a great spot for anything but north or northwest winds. Checkout Henry Morgan's cave.
