Georgetown's entire downtown is a National Historic District, where visitors can stroll along the live oak shaded streets and adjacent neighborhoods, admiring the city homes of former plantation owners. There are 63 downtown homes on the National Historic Register. Georgetown is also known for its haunted history and there are several ghost tours available. The town and its residents welcome transients with a wealth of services, including good restaurants and interesting shopping. Another "must see" is the Georgetown Lighthouse on North Island. The third weekend in October is a great time to be in Georgetown for the annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, which celebrates the town's maritime history and features wooden boat exhibits, demonstrations and races. Proceeds go toward adding exhibits to the maritime museum.
