Fish flies swarm St. Clair Shores, other lakeside communities across metro Detroit

Susan LaDuke refuses to get out of the car when she picks up carry-out pizza this time of year. 

Instead, she cracks the window a smidge, hands over the money and slides the cardboard box through the slit. 

The St. Clair Shores resident can’t take any chances. It's fish fly season. 

“I don’t do bugs at all, let alone those fish flies,” LaDuke said. “I will go 10 miles out of my way to avoid them.”

Fish flies, also known as mayflies, descend in droves around June each year in places that border Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, the St. Clair River and the Detroit River.
