Hurricane Harvey came ashore along Texas' Gulf Coast last Friday as a Category 4, the most powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. in more than a decade. It then hovered over the region dumping a national record of over 51.88 inches of rain in places.

Despite all that, the Corpus Christi Marina came through the ordeal largely unscathed, open and ready to help displaced liveaboards from other, less fortunate marinas.

An awning ripped from a restaurant entrance and a wooden garbage bin uprooted and thrown. An old white sport fishing boat was partially submerged and several boats' sails came unfurled and were ripped and whipping in wind gusts of more than 50 mph.

"We had some boats come loose, some finger pier damage, but overall we were really, really, fortunate,” said Leah Hughen, management aide at Corpus Christi Marina. “Because we're a municipal marina we're considered essential personnel so we chose to stay. Below sea level had to pack up entire office and put in a U-Haul. We all went home and came back."

Hughen, who has lived in Corpus 20 years and before that Florida is a hurricane veteran and is still amazed at the widespread flood devastation that is ongoing in her region, “the hurricane was par for the course, but this flooding is something else.”

She adds that the marina is currently “working on a plan to assist live aboard boaters who are now displaced from their homes in Rockport and Port Aransas, “because the docks were damaged.”

“We're trying to figure out how to help them," Hughen said.

When reached by Waterway Guide staff, According to Peter M. Davidson, Marina Superintendent/Director Marina Patrol, City of Corpus Christi responded, “All of our docks are 100% fine and weathered Hurricane Harvey marvelously.”

“Docks performed as designed for storm surge including the Cat 3 hurricane that came through our marina. Other coastal towns got hit with a Cat 4 and are totally devastated,” he adds. “The minimal damage we received were from a couple of boaters whom did not do a fine job in securing their boats for the expected Heavy Weather.”

Davidson reports that the marina is now fully functional, “we have boat slips for rent and no issues whatsoever. The channel from the Gulf of Mexico all the way into the marina is clear of all obstructions.” The marina accept vessels from 8ft to 200ft in length with up to a ten-foot draft and offers power for vessels from 30/50 and 100 amp single phase, including 3 phase.
