MM 84 Alligator River Marina: May be closed to transients. For many years, the marina has been a halfway stopover between Coinjock and Dowry Creek or Belhaven. With the new bridge construction replacing the Alligator River Swing bridge, the marina is home to the construction crew and equipment. Call ahead and check if they still have room for transients.
MM 208.8 G5A by Peletier Creek: Recent reports show only 5 to 6 MLLW on the Bob423 track. A shoal runs across the width of the ICW channel. Follow the Bob423 track for best water and allow for tide if you need more.
MM 240.7 Onslow Bridge Construction: The bridge is on a normal schedule for the weekend but closed to navigation from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the week of 10/28 to 11/1/2024. Passages can be made from noon to 1:00 pm and before and after the closure periods.
The new bridge will be in the closed to navigation position from 7:00 a.m. on Monday, 11/4 through 9:00 p.m. on Thursday 11/7. During all closure periods above, the new bridge will have a vertical clearance of approximately 15 feet above mean high water in the closed position and a horizontal clearance of approximately 20 feet. Vessels that can safely transit through the new bridge with the reduced clearances may do so at any time (but the passage timing is still governed by the old bridge opening schedule - on top of the hour). See the link for details.
MM 320 Lockwoods Folly Approach shoaling: The channel by Lockwoods Folly River is narrowing. Be sure to follow the revised 10/23/2024 Bob423 track to avoid the shoaling. R36 may be farther northwest than shown on the chart. Several boats have touch bottom through here when straying from the Bob423 track at low tide.
MM 460 Isle of Palms Shoaling: A dredge is in the area transferring sand to a nearby beach with buoys in the water marking the dredge pipe. The detour route can still be taken. The photo shows the dredge pipe buoys bordering the detour route. Pass them to starboard when heading south until you cross over the pipe at the end which is laying on the bottom.
MM 729.2 Nassau Sound Dredging: Captains reported some confusion going around the dredge in the area. Just leave the Bob423 track to your starboard when heading south. You may have to stand off farther than usual due to dredging buoys. The yellow buoys mark the dredge pipe, which goes in the direction of the bridge. You don't have to go around them.
Be sure to use the Explorer on Waterway Guide's website for updated shoaling information while planning your voyage. The areas mentioned are only the recent changes, not a complete picture of all shoaling. Additional resources are available in the Waterway Guide digital publication 2024 ICW Cruising Guide by Bob423.
