Washington, DC's waterfront at The Wharf is hosting the eleven Clipper Round the World racing yachts as skippers and crews prepare to sail the final leg back to Portsmouth, UK. Festivities are in full swing for the coming weekend.
Waterway Guide Media has joined in the festivities and has been on location all week to applaud the achievements of the adventurers who are circumnavigating the globe. The first race was in 1996. Since then, over 6,000 Race Crews from over 60 nations have trained and raced in the event. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is the founder of Clipper Round the World. As the first person to sail solo non-stop around the globe, completing his 10-month journey in April of 1969, his presence brings a special luster to the race.
Events DC, the premier host of conventions, sports, entertainment, and cultural events in the nation's capital has developed a stellar lineup of activities to highlight the Clipper Round the World 2023-24 visit. From boat tours to fireworks and live music, the achievements of the race crews are commemorated with Clipper Race Fleet Week at The Wharf.
Crews on each boat comprise men and women who accept the challenge and join for a single leg, or multiple legs, of the journey. Vying for points along the way, the vessels race throughout the year they are underway while visiting host ports and stops along the way. The last leg of the circumnavigation begins Tuesday with a sendoff from the nation's capital as the boats head across the Atlantic to Scotland and then on to home port for the finish.
