• Ferry Traffic: The swift Staten Island and Governors Island ferries often cross paths with smaller boats. Timing your crossing just after these ferries can minimize wake issues.
• Debris Caution: Especially on outgoing tides, floating debris can pose navigational hazards. Always keep a lookout and steer clear of obstructions.

Security is tight on the East River, with regulations frequently updated by the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard:

• Stay Informed: Always check the latest security advisories before setting out.
• Emergency Channels: The New York Police Department's marine division monitors VHF Channel 16 for emergencies, providing an extra layer of safety for cruisers.

The Battery to Hell Gate

Transiting from The Battery to Hell Gate presents a deep, well-marked route favored by many cruisers:

• Roosevelt Island Choices: You can choose between the East or West Channel around Roosevelt Island. The West Channel offers more room and spectacular views, but security alerts might necessitate taking the East Channel.
