Aids to Navigation (ATONs) along New Jersey IWW and its associated waterways are made of two types: (1) USACE ATONs and (2) state and private ATONs. The USACE ATONs, with the possible exception of nuns and cans, usually remain in place year-round. State and private ATONs are usually pulled at the end of summer (Labor Day) and not replaced until late May (Memorial Day). Navigation before all of the ATONs are in position, with the exception of the year-round USACE ATONs, relies on local knowledge.
Boaters traveling in early spring or late fall should not assume that all charted aids to navigation will be present. Some of the floating aids to navigation between Cape May Inlet and Manasquan Inlet are removed each fall to avoid damage from ice during winter months. Coast Guard Group Cape May (609-898-6900, ext. 8) attempts to service and reestablish all aids to navigation by Memorial Day each spring. Also, the Coast Guard frequently moves floating aids to mark the best channel; therefore, your charts may not agree with the aids you see. Be advised that many facilities remove their floating docks after Labor Day and replace them around Memorial Day.
