Let fly the piratical puns and belay your disbelief for an Airbnb that will shiver yer timbers just in time for Halloween. A pirate ship that went on the market earlier in 2022 is now a short-term vacation rental in Callao, Virginia, about 65 miles northeast of Richmond.
It's called The Jolly Lodger and it rents for $292 per night, the listing on Airbnb notes.
"Arrrrrrrgh! Just in time for Halloween, stay in comfort on a fully decorated pirate ship! Docked in paradise in Callao, VA the ship features two bedrooms and 1.5 camping bathrooms, working kitchen and upscale linens," the listing says.
But how did it all happen?
According to Lauren DeMarco, who owns it with her husband Kellen, "The jist is, we've always loved the northern neck. We work from home so we've been able to spend a bunch of time out there. When I saw the boat online, I jokingly said to my husband Kellen, 'Want to buy a pirate ship?'"
Kellen's reply? "Let's do it!"
The ship was listed for sale in August for $49,000 and had "hundreds of offers from as far away as Australia, according to the Washingtonian newspaper. The little ship had gone viral but the couple went to see the then-owner Dan Corder who was getting cash offers every hour of the day. "But we took the time to drive down and see him, and that was important to him," Lauren tells Waterway Guide News. "That someone have their eyes on the ship and commit to it."
"We looked for the perfect place for it - scouring local marinas - but nothing felt right," she explains. "One day, Dan called and said, 'my neighbor's selling his property - the historic home of Benjamin Franklin Lewis, who invented the crab pot. It has a full dock that'd be perfect for the pirate ship.' And we were sold."
She added that "Dan's working with us so we can help bring tourism to Callao; it's really a beautiful small town but close to everything you could want or need. We're thrilled to have a place where our kids can grow up and hang out on the water and bring their friends. People can rent the boat AND the house if they want, and there are kayaks, horseshoes, fishing gear, grills, firepit, a picnic gazebo, etc."
"In the end, this may be the worst decision we've ever made, but we'll always remember that crazy time we bought a pirate ship," says Lauren. "We've had the boat listed for about 5 days and bookings are beginning to trickle in. The ship sleeps 4 people and I'm not sure people trust that it really is comfortable. The beds are new and nice, and if you've ever slept on a boat you know that the water rocking you is the best sleep you'll ever have. We hope lots of people will check it out."

"On site is a private bath house and laundry room, kayaks, outdoor games and picnic/grill area!"
Features inside the ship include:
-
One queen and one full bed
-
Toiletries
-
Games and books
-
SmartTV
The listing cautions landlubbers, "The home is best thought of as a tiny house on water. If you're not comfortable stepping into/off of a boat, walking on narrow passageways, sleeping in small spaces, or using a camping toilet (or walking 100 feet to a bathhouse), you may prefer to stay in our main house on the property."
