This year's Classic Boat Show marks the 20th year of the event and proceeds benefit the museum. The show is scheduled for Saturday, September 10, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $10, which includes admission that day to the museum.
Reedville was established in 1864 by Elijah Reed, a sea captain who moved his menhaden fishing operation from Maine to the Chesapeake Bay after the Civil War. The subsequent growth of the menhaden fishing industry resulted in the development of the town of Reedville and was once considered the wealthiest town in America per capita. Today the Main Street is still lined with historic Victorian sea captains' houses and the remnants of a working waterfront. Reedville has not changed much over the years and is still a community of local watermen. The town boasts several Airbnbs, a coffee shop, an ice cream shop and four seafood restaurants.
In addition to the displays of antique and classic boats, activities include a nautical flea market, a reading and book signing by local author and award-winning reporter Larry Chowning, model boat building for kids, a raffle for a Blue Crab - Gloucester 11 sailboat and other events throughout the day. Sails on the historic Skipjack Claud W. Somers will also be offered at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. that day. The Elva C will also ferry visitors to and from the docks in town.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. Visit the museum's web site for details and for boat registration forms for those wanting to display their vessels, or call 804-453-6529 for more information.
