The 21-mile-long Alligator River-Pungo River Canal runs northeast to southwest. It is scenic and heavily wooded at its upper end.
Do not be in a hurry or you might miss deer snacking near the shore or a black bear swimming across the channel. The occasional alligator has been spotted here as well. Farther on are areas that have burned in the past but now have their second growth.
