Outside Route: Delmarva Coast, DE, MD, VA

The Delmarva coast is an intriguing cruising ground that is bypassed by most Bay travelers but enjoyed by boaters more comfortable in coastal waters.
This stretch balances lovely resort towns to the north–such as Lewes and Ocean City–with the wild coastline to the south. There are several inlets for tucking in if the winds aren’t favorable or the weather is disagreeable. The best options are Ocean City, Chincoteague, Wachapreague and Great Machipongo before arriving in Cape Charles (140 nm from Cape May). Inlets along the Atlantic change frequently and some are not well charted so it is best to seek local knowledge when possible.
