The town of Lafitte is named after Jean Lafitte, the most infamous pirate of the Gulf Coast. Legend has it that many of his treasures are buried along the Barataria Waterway. Pirates no longer use this passage to the Gulf of Mexico, but cruisers and fishermen enjoy its scenic bays, bayous and marshland.
