Illinois Waterway, IL

The Chicago River and the Calumet River join to form the Illinois River near Joliet, IL. This is generally referred to as the “Illinois Waterway.” At Joliet the Illinois Waterway flows south and west to the Mississippi River at Grafton, IL, about 20 miles north of St. Louis. There are seven large locks (110 feet wide by 1,200 feet long) between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.
