The Villages of Oscoda and Au Sable flank the Au Sable River a short distance from the entrance. The Au Sable River was a major thoroughfare for logs in the lumbering years. Reforestation during the past century has restored its banks, making the Au Sable one of Michigan’s favorite canoeing rivers.
Despite the dams, which require short portages, most of the riverside is wild and beautiful.
