Since the last time we stayed on this dock the town has invested a considerable amount of money and labor in the park. The lawn has been cleaned up and a paved walking path with night lighting has been installed. The dock remains the same and we used our fender boards to keep the boat off the dock posts in 11 feet of water. Fortunately, there is no tide and no current to speak of so the tie up was easy. An excellent Kroger supermarket, pharmacy, ABC store, and about a half dozen restaurants are within a half mile of the dock. The park it open to the public 24 hours a day but, in the several times that we have used the facility, we have never had nor heard of any security issues. Cellular service is what you would expect for an urban area: very good with over 100 mbps download speeds on our phones. We watched in fascination as a man using five lines with chicken drumsticks as bait brought in several dozen blue crabs during the evening fishing from the end of the wall.

Great stop. Enjoy the Great Bridge museum (history of the battle) or the nice trails by the museum (walk across the bridge to enjoy). Or walk to ice cream, Panera, grocery, and even a vet on the south side. Nothing fancy but good place.

Free Dock #1 is between Great Bridge Lock and the Bridge. It is on the south side of the ICW and closer to shopping than Chesapeake Free Dock #2. The dock is in good condition but it is nowhere near as nice as the Free Dock #2. There is space for four or five large boats. There are no facilities at #1. A good overnight spot when Free Dock #2 is full. Depth at the dock was 12 feet. Cellular service was excellent for the Big Three.

Docks a bit rougher than Dock #1 on the other side of the bridge but a shorter walk to stores and shopping and puts on the side of the bridge next to the lock. As mentioned in the other review there's propane fills at the Great Bridge Service Center about 1/4 mile walk.

Great spot to overnight. It is very calm here. Shops are within walking distance, and the park is nice.

There are two free docks, one on either side of the Great Bridge. We stayed at the east dock. There is a park with trails; great for dog walking. Easy walk to shopping and restaurants. You will experience wakes on the east dock as boaters leave the lock in a hurry to make the next bridge.
