In my seemingly never-ending search for a calm anchorage on this windy Christmas weekend, I FINALLY got to Baker's Haulover Basin. It's where I wish I'd started the weekend from. This is a very sheltered cove with lots of deep water, making it easy to park very close to shore. It was also full of boats -- there had to be 50 of them in here with me -- but still plenty of room for more. Oddly, I'd say that less than 20% of the boats were occupied during my one-night stay. I suspect people anchor here for the Christmas holiday and get ground transportation to family gatherings, etc. These aren't the typical bunch of empty boats; most of them are NOT derelict but simply empty. There was some noise from the park on Christmas Day and lots of rental kayaks and paddleboards paddling around the northeast arm of the anchorage where I was anchored. But as soon as the showers began, everyone disappeared and it got very quiet. Good holding in 16 feet of water about 150 feet from shore -- and I only had 50 feet of rode out! No real current to speak of where I was. Heavy winds came in from the southeast, but I was completely sheltered. (It was a real pleasure to be in calm water after a week of rough anchorages.) There's a beach for shore access, but you'll have to row in; it's marked No Motorized Boats. I took my pups to another landing away from the main activity of the park where I could motor in and land on a coral rock beach suitable for a RIB or other hard-bottomed boat. I found a wooded area with long pine needles on the ground and plenty of room for my pups to run and do their business. (Please remember to clean up after your dogs, no matter how remote the area is.) This is a great anchorage and, if I didn't already lose so much time on my trip south due to bad weather, I'd definitely stay another day or two. Highly recommended. I hope I can come back.

This was a surprisingly great anchorage! While there may not be access to FIU, the adjacent park allows access for non-motored vessels. We paddled the dinghy into the beach. There are some others things around here, but not necessarily easy access. However, it is a great place to anchor out and relax away from the ICW.

We anchored south of the anchor symbol in the larger harbor area. Still protected very well and plenty of water all around. We had two challenges. First, coming in, the channel isn't marked so we guessed in the center. It got quite low 5' for my 4 1/2' draft so I glided over to get in. Very quickly it got deep again. Second was a place to let dogs off. The beach is cordoned off and marked on one side kayaks only, so we went in a bit and landed on a rocky shore across from the college. Not so bad but be prepared to wade in knee level with your dingy to let them off the boat. Plenty of room in here for many boats. In the course of just a few hours we did swing a 360 around the anchor spot so left enough scope out to keep hold.

Great anchorage, nice location. You can drop off or pick someone up on the university side (west), but can’t leave your dinghy there. Marine police patrol regularly on weekends, less often during the week. Our Manson supreme anchor got fouled on some towing wire on the bottom. Had to dive on it to unhook. Don’t anchor between the anchorage symbol west toward the tip of the peninsula just south of the wrecked sailboat on the E side of the peninsula.
