If the weather is fair, traveling is a priority, and the desire is for less crowded spaces, then the Piankatank River is a good bet. You can either go all the way to Fishing Bay and be well protected from most bad weather or you can anchor a full 2 miles earlier at Cherry Point where, in fair weather, you have a good alternative. Instead of continuing on into the river, take a turn to port at Green 7 and head towards shore, minding the shallows to your port side. As you approach the shore there is a plateau at about 18 feet MLW with excellent holding. Don't get too close to shore because depths look to abruptly rises to less than three feet MLW. We elected to anchor in 19 feet of water and let out sufficient chain to satisfy scope requirements. There is room for ten or more boats, even with scope/swing requirements. We did not drag at all. This is open anchorage but, if you are facing moderate winds from the southeast through the southwest, it should provide adequate protection against wind and waves. There is a tidal current that runs through the anchorage but, at its peak, it did not appear to be anything to be concerned about. Shopping and restaurant reservations will have to wait for another day. Cell phone reception is very good. You are about a mile off the channel so the few boats that came by at speed threw wakes from a distance. We were here at the end of October so it was quiet night.
