There is fairly strong current caused by the tide changes. The current keeps boat away from the shore. Your boat will swing 180 degrees when the tide changes. Be sure to put out plenty of scope. The bottom is sandy mud and our anchor came up clean. The anchorage is exposed to winds from the NE and SW.
There is shore access at the Athens free dock.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Draft: 5.0'Overall Rating:4Holding:5Wind Protection:3Current Flow:2Wake Protection:4Scenic Beauty:4Ease of Shopping:4Shore Access:4Pet Friendly:4Cell Service:5When we arrived at Athens there was already a 45 foot trawler on the 80' long Athens Free Dock so we anchored out for the night at the Middle Flats anchorage icon in 12' MLW with excellent holding in sandy mud. In the morning the anchor came up clean. There are two things to remember with this anchorage. First, there is a 5' tide and, second, there is as much as a 2.5 mph current on the major ebb tide. Don't skip on scope. We were a comfortable distance off the shore and had plenty of room as we swung with the change of current. There was 15 mile per hour winds from the north when we anchored at 1500 but the waves coming down the channel were not an issue. The anchorage is exposed on an NE/SW axis and consideration should be given with strong winds from those directions. It was a Monday and there was little traffic and no wakes to bother us. The anchorage is far enough around the corner that you are not bothered by traffic in the main channel. Cell phone reception was very good for all three major carriers. Shore access is available at the Athens Town Dock or across the river at the Hudson Town dock.
