For those with no need to go to shore, Pungo Creek offers an excellent alternative to anchoring in Belhaven Harbor. It will add about one mile to your overall travel distance but offers space, good holding, and quiet as well as an easy off/easy on to the ICW. Coming from the south you can turn off the channel north of Green 7 and aim for Red 2PC at the entrance to Pungo Creek. Coming from the north you can exit at the entry markers for the side channel to Belhaven and aim for the same red entry mark to the creek. Coming in either direction you will find no less than 11 feet of water to the creek entrance and then no less than 10 feet to the anchor icon. We anchored next to the icon in 11 feet of water with winds forecasted to be from the northeast at 10 to 15 knots with a moderate chop. This stretched the anchorage's wind and wave protection to the compass limit but we decided to give it a try. The actual weather was more like 10 mph and settling.

Northeast winds are the limit for this anchorage but, as you back around through north and on to west the wind and wave protection in this anchorage is excellent. I can easily see staying here during extended winds of 30+ knots with adequate tranquility. The anchor bit and held on the drop and wind, wave, and wake issues were less that we expected and there was no current. As dinner approached the wind shifted to the north, and we spend a quiet, restful night at anchor with no issues. The anchor came up with a good clump of mud on it, having spent the entire night in one place. Cellular service was good and our cellular internet speeds were also good. If you really wanted to you could take your dinghy the one and a half miles into town with no problem. If you are just passing through, Persimmon Point is a good alternative to downtown Belhaven and a strategic stop getting from Oriental into the Chesapeake Bay.
