Prior to haul out, mid December, we anchored on the south side of the channel in front of the beach. Initially we held very well. But after several days of conflicting currents and wind the boat spun itself out and drifted. February, after repairs, we launched and again anchored waiting for a weather window to head south. Strong winds and conflicting currents spun the boat and broke us free three times during our nine day wait. We tried locations both north and south of the channel. At times of light wind and/or slack tide we felt comfortable enough to leave the boat. During night when the wind was strong we kept an anchor watch.
That said, Ft. Pierce has a lot to offer and is worth the visit. There are many good restaurants, marine services and the city marina has a great location at downtown with a good dinghy dock.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer

Nice dinghy trip to the island. And easy access to dinghy dock across channel. Then, walk across the bridge to the Saturday farmers market.

Waters are so clear. We anchored on several trips and stayed for more than a month each time. The little island Is perfect for dogs /kids to run around or just a spot to relax. Across the channel is a beach. Lots of places to kayak. Nearby small grocery store. Dinghy ride to downtown docks.
