We anchored NE of the marker in the area on AquaMap charts marketed as 2.9'. We found 10-12 ft MLW within 75 yards of the shoreline here. Depths where the marker is placed were more in the 18-25 ft MLW range. We were here with NW/NNW winds, including a storm with winds of 35+ knots and held well. It is comfortable with N/NW winds. When winds changed to a more southerly direction following the storm and tide was in opposite direction, it got quite bumpy. Would not recommend if Southerly is forecast. When winds changed back, it was again comfortable. Did not see anyplace to land a dinghy. This is a good staging anchorage for going out Port Royal or if coming in late in the day. There were some local boats coming up/down the creek but was quiet at night. Someone has even left a WiFi signal open for guests.

NOTE: We snagged an unmarked underwater cable in this area. We were able to pull it off the anchor, but recommend anchoring before you reach the 2.9' ft section in slightly deeper water to avoid it. Tidal change here was about 7 feet.

We anchored in the mouth of Cowens Creek, about 800 yards east of red nun #36. The Beaufort Shrimp Festival was going on at the time at the Beaufort waterfront, so the surrounding anchorages were mostly full and a tad tight on swing room for us. We had to wait overnight for a transient slip at Safe Harbor Beaufort Marina, so we didn't want to stray too far only to have to cruise back to Beaufort and choose to anchor near the mouth of the creek. There was no wake protection, so we experienced the normal amount of waking from being along a busy part of the river. We could have gone further up the creek, but were concerned about swing room at low tide, so we decided to anchor closer to the main river. The anchor set easily, with no drag, in soft mud. We were far enough from the shoreline grass and reeds that the no-see-ums were minimal, and the current was more subdued than we thought it would be. We had 4 bars of T-Mobile reception. This is a no-frills spot for sure, but it got the job done in a pleasant fashion.

Lovely location. Very calm at night when we were there. Windy during the day but very few waves bigger than 1ft. Took a bit for the anchor to set, but once it set holding was pretty good. Jumped in the water for a swim when current was not so strong.

Anchored on the icon in 12 ft of water close to ebb. Good holding in stiff mud. I had some light easterlies but low fetch, still not very good protection. VERY good from the north and west. Half hour off the ICW. Good overnighter.
