The Abeel Island anchorage offers a peaceful stop away from the noise of highways and trains. Leave the channel west of Green 385 and anchor in 15 feet of water off the bottom end of Abeel Island. Be advised that the shoaling from the bottom of the island extends further out than the charts indicate and the depths are also less than indicated. Anchor in 15 – 17 feet of water with good holding in mud with only a slight current heading downstream. Our anchor came up with clean chain and a good hunk of mud on the anchor flukes. While the anchorage is somewhat open to wind from the east there is good wind protection and excellent wave protection from all other directions. Shore access can be had from Lock 15's wall about one half mile downstream from the anchorage. Although you will be just off the channel there is little or no traffic after the locks close down at 6 in the evening. Cell service is adequate.

The big advantage of this anchorage is that it is not located next to a railroad crossing so the trains that come by at night are not sounding their horns 100 yards from where you are tied up. Road and rail noises are quite low, a blessing for light sleepers. We would definitely stop here again.
