The deeper water is to the shore side of the channel (20'+) and the channel gets shallower on the island side of the channel. Do not go more than 1/3 of the way up the island. We anchored in 8' of water, on the island side, about a third of the way up the channel. Good holding with a mud bottom. The current will keep your boat away from the shore. We had a very peaceful night at anchor. We had 3 boats in the anchorage. Highly recommend this anchorage. You MUST exit anchorage from the end you entered.

With adverse currents, using this anchorage will make for a reasonable day's run.
Leave main channel just prior to Cumberland River to go upriver in the chute between Cumberland Island and the LDB of the Cumberland River at mm 0. Go up channel in 16' of water normal pool beyond the tail of Cumberland Island and move towards the island until you find the depth that you wish to drop your anchor. Good holding in sand with approximately 1 mph of current to hold you in place. Current less as you move towards shore and into shallower water. Room for any number of boats to anchor. Good protection from wakes and winds if you go far enough up the island. Fair cellular service. No shore access. Leave by going downstream and around the tail of Cumberland Island, going downriver at least 400 yards before attempting to cross over into the main river channel. Do not try to go out upriver as there is a major wing dam across the opening and significant shoaling behind it.View location on the Waterway Guide Explorer
