Eleuthera Island, Current Cut Navigation Information
- Date Reported: Apr 19, 2018

- Description:
Current Cut, as it's name implies, can produce very strong currents (up to 10 knots!) at spring tides. We have found the current to be negligible at 1 hour and 30 minutes after Nassau high tide. Please note, NOAA tide charts for Nassau do not adjust for Daylight Savings time. Explorer charts show two routes on the west side of the cut: a dogleg route and a "shallow draft" straight-in route. We had 11.5 feet of water on the "shallow draft" route at 1 hour and 45 minutes after Nassau high tide with shallow bars on either side (you must read the water, but it is a clear and wide channel).

Draft: 4.5'We traversed the cut from the Glass Window side on our way to Spanish Wells. We went through on a rising tide and could feel the current but powered right through. Overall I was easier to navigate than what I had expected.

Draft: 4.0'Transited east to west yesterday on a falling tide (Eleuthera -West Coast) close to but before slack. Current was running east to west at about 3 knots. This was fine because we also had winds from the east. There is no need to wait for slack if the tides and winds are both moving in the same direction.

Vessel Type: Sail
LOA: 30'
Draft: 4.3'I travelled though the cut from the Spanish Wells side to the Glass Window side. My target was to go through the cut at or around slack at high tide. I entered the mouth of the cut one hour and twenty-four minutes past Nassau high tide. (I read about slack high tide at the cut being around one hour forty-five minutes past Nassau high tide. As the flooding tide runs East at Current Cut, that is from the Spanish Wells side to the Glass Window side, by going through a little early I figured I'd have a little current helping push me though.) Though the narrowest part of the cut my speed only increased one quarter knot. Never did I feel out of control of the boat. With the help of my chart plotter navigating was pretty straight forward.<br /> I arrived a few hours before I wanted to go through the cut. I anchored north of the cut, and I walked into town and then to the cut. Pretty cool sight as the water flowing though the cut, a few hours before slack tide, looked more like a fast-moving river.

Draft: 4.0'This is a short quick pass. Plenty depth and width. Plenty of current too. We spend a few hours drift diving it. What a wonderful site!
