GA: Jekyll Creek, shoaling MM 683.2
- Date Reported: Jun 18, 2024
- Reporter: Bob423
- Source: User
- Description:
Update: 5.4 MLLW as of 1/12/2024 on the Bob423 track.
Note that Jekyll Creek is very sensitive to wind tides. An east wind of 15 kt or greater for a day or so will increase depths 1 to 2 feet. A west wind of the same strength will blow water out and decrease depths to as much as a foot.
The dredging of Jekyll Creek was completed in the fall of 2019 but has shoaled in several spots between G17 and R20. The channel was only dredged 75 feet wide, not the usual 125 to 150 feet like in other areas.
Heading south, start your turn by G19 about 300 feet before reaching it and past 60 feet off. Pass R20 by 100 feet off and R20A by 150 feet off. The channel is farther east than you might think by following the buoys.
This passage is very hard to eyeball. The best strategy is to download and follow the B423 track which will keep you in the middle of the narrow channel through Jekyll Creek. If you deviate by as little as 30 feet, you may be out of the channel into shoal water at low tide.
The 8/26/2022 USACE survey is shown. The Bob423 track was developed before the most recent survey, yet it follows the deepest water shown by the new survey.
Note: the turn at R19 is 300 feet north of R19! Don't turn too soon.
