Overview: All-weather, wide and deep entrance to the Mackay River leading to Brunswick.
Approach: St. Simons Lighted Buoy "STS" is at N 31° 02.809'/W 081° 14.416'.
Navigation: From the sea buoy, proceed northwesterly to quick flashing red buoy "16" on the range, then turn to port and pick up Plantation Creek Range. Be sure to start from the sea buoy due to shallows that extend quite far from shore. Channel shallows very rapidly outside of the markers, and ebb current is quite strong at the mouth of the inlet.
Cautions & Hazards: Start from the sea buoy due to shallows that extend quite far from shore. Channel shallows very rapidly outside of the markers, and ebb current is quite strong at the mouth of the inlet. Be advised that this inlet can be rough when the wind and current are opposed. This is a busy entrance; keep watch for big ships transiting the inlet.
ICW Connection: The ICW is immediately inside the inlet at Mile 678.
