GA Inlet Caution: Tybee Roads (Savannah River) Entrance
- Date Reported: Jun 2, 2022
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Overview: This is an active inlet offering entry to Savannah via the ICW and Savannah River. Slower boats bound for the Savannah River on this route should enter Tybee Roads with a favorable current, if possible, as the effects of the current start many miles offshore in the Atlantic.
Approach: Savannah River Entrance Channel Lighted "T" is at N 31° 57.700'/W 80° 43.100'.
Navigation: Entering the channel from the sea buoy, follow the Tybee range to quick flashing red bell buoy "8," turning north to follow the Bloody Point Range to flashing red "14." Turning to port here, follow the Jones Island Range to flashing red buoy "18," and then turn slightly southwest and continue in on Tybee Knoll Cut Range to flashing red buoy "24." Here, you will have Oyster Bed Island to your north and Cockspur Island to the south. Pick up New Channel Range and follow the channel markers. Note the partially submerged breakwater that begins just past flashing red buoy "18," which is marked by a flashing white light, noted as "Fl 4s 16ft 5M" on your chart.
Cautions & Hazards: Coming from the north, mariners need to be aware of Gaskin Banks, an extensive shoal area extending nearly 8 nm out from Hilton Head. Also to be avoided is a submerged breakwater north of and roughly parallel to flashing red buoy "12" and flashing red buoy "14."
ICW Connection: Savannah River crosses ICW at Fields Cut (Mile 575.7), directly opposite flashing green buoy "35."
- Lat / Lon: N 32° 02.161' / W 080° 53.004'
