SC Inlet Caution: Calibogue Sound Entrance
- Date Reported: Jun 2, 2022
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Sea Buoy: Use the sea buoy for Tybee Roads, lighted red and white Morse (A) (RACON) buoy T located at N 31 57.700'/W 80 43.100'.
Overview: This entrance leads to Calibogue Sound and Hilton Head Island and is an alternative to Tybee Roads.
Navigation: For South Hilton Head Island via Calibogue Sound, use the sailing directions for entering the Savannah River but stay on Bloody Point Range after flashing red buoy 14, passing the lower range light and leaving green daybeacon 1 well to port. Next, keep clear of the 5- to 6-foot deep shoal at the back Bloody Point Range, and then turn north toward quick flashing green buoy 3. Depths will briefly fall to 8 to 10 feet MLW from 14 feet, then rise again as you pass quick flashing green buoy 3. At quick flashing green buoy 3, turn due north, and proceed to flashing green buoy 5, where you can then follow the remaining channel markers into Calibogue Sound.
Cautions & Hazards: Coming from the north, mariners need to be aware of Gaskin Banks, an extensive shoal area extending nearly 8 nm out from Hilton Head Island. There is also a submerged breakwater north of the Tybee Roads channel that is roughly parallel to flashing red buoys 12 and 14, which must be avoided if headed toward Calibogue Sound. Entering this inlet needs your full attention when transiting.ICW Connection: Connects to the ICW at the Cooper River (Mile 564).
