VA Inlet Caution: Lynnhaven Inlet
- Date Reported: Jun 2, 2022
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Overview: Provides easy and fast access to the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay or the ICW. Marinas catering to sportfishermen abound. Located just southeast of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, inside Cape Henry. This is not a jettied inlet like many others.
Approach: Lynnhaven Inlet Light "1L" is at N 36° 55.091'/W 076° 05.363'.
Navigation: Follow the markers in just past red nun "6" where you will encounter the fixed Lesner (US 60) Bridge with a vertical clearance of 45 feet. Note that there are fixed bridges with 20- to 36-foot clearances to negotiate to the south inside this inlet, which eventually leads to Broad Bay, where there are anchoring possibilities.
Cautions & Hazards: The well-marked entry is dredged about every two years and the entrance markers are moved as needed to allow for shifting channel depths. It would be advisable to call one of the towing companies on your VHF radio for current information about this inlet as it is constantly changing. There is a large sportfishing fleet operating out of Lynnhaven Inlet and traffic can be heavy. Expect a fairly strong current through the bridge.
- Lat / Lon: N 36° 54.567' / W 076° 05.507'
