FL Inlet Caution: Angelfish Creek
- Date Reported: Nov 29, 2018
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Sea Buoy: No sea buoy. Steer to waypoint N 25 19.600'/W 80 14.914'.
Overview: For vessels wanting to take advantage of the Gulf Stream for a transit to Bimini Island in the Bahamas, Angelfish Creek provides a more southerly approach than Miami. Be aware that the 1.8-nm-long inlet adds 14 nm to the Bahamas trip, making it 56 nm instead of 42 nm.
Navigation: Entering from Card Sound at flashing red buoy 14, the depths will increase quickly to 7 to 10 feet, then to over 13 feet until you approach the exit to the Atlantic. At red buoy 4 you will see three green daybeacons ahead. Favor the red side as you approach flashing red buoy 2 and proceed slowly through to the Atlantic while watching your depth. There is a cross current here; pay attention to your track so that you dont get pushed out of the channel.
Cautions & Hazards: The channel is a fair weather proposition only, particularly from the Atlantic. The depth from the Atlantic side is approximately 4 feet at the beginning of the channel. Because of this, an ocean side approach is not recommended for cruising vessels. Vessels traveling offshore in inclement weather would be best advised to continue on to Government Cut in Miami (26 nm).
ICW connection: Inlet leads into Card Sound, with the ICW 1.4 nm away at Mile 1120. - Lat / Lon: N 25° 19.710' / W 080° 14.965'

Vessel Type: Sail
LOA: 40'
Draft: 5.2'Went through Angelfish from Card Sound an hour before low tide. Followed the deep water and stayed near the green channel markers while exiting into Hawks Channel Side. No problems. Unable to report depth due to possible inaccuracy of depth finder.

Vessel Type: Sail
LOA: 55'
Draft: 7.0'When passing through the cut from Biscayne Bay southbound toward Card Sound, we ran aground twice in the middle of the channel. After exiting the cut, we aimed at Fl G "13" and continued very slowly with our depthfinder reading 1 1/2 inch under our keel, holding exactly at that for a long time. We were stretching it trying to get through there and got off easily. We were told by a member of the Ocean Reef Club that we should use this route coming to visit him. Made it through Angelfish Creek, but would never do it again.

Vessel Type: Sail
LOA: 49'
Draft: 6.0'I transited Angelfish Creek 6 years ago in our CT41. Full keel with 6' draft. The danger point is the coral reef on the ocean side. We passed at high tide with inches to spare. I wouldn't do it again in that boat.
