FL Inlet Caution: Boca Raton Inlet
- Date Reported: Jun 2, 2022
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Overview: Narrow, dredged cut located 5 nm northward of Hillsboro Inlet Light. Mariners are advised to use extreme caution when transiting the area. The Boca Raton Inlet is not recommended for passage without local knowledge due to shoaling to 4 feet MLW. Continue to Hillsboro Inlet if possible.
Approach: Boca Raton Inlet Jetty Light "1" is at N 26° 20.111'/W 080° 04.183'.
Navigation: Tall, pink Boca Raton Resort & Club is a landmark visible from many miles offshore. Quick flashing green buoy "1" marks the south jetty and quick flashing red buoy "2" is on the north jetty. It is strongly recommended to head south of green buoy "1" (south jetty) and approach the inlet from the south. The Boca Inlet (Haven Ashe) Bridge crosses the inlet with 23-foot closed vertical clearance. It opens on signal. Be sure to request a bridge opening upon arrival in the inlet to avoid circling in the strong current.
Webcam: For a live view of the inlet visit Boca Inlet Webcam.
Cautions & Hazards: Local knowledge is required, as shoaling outside the inlet can limit access at low tide. Depths change frequently due to shoaling and shifting sandbars, and swift-moving currents cause swells where the outflow meets the ocean. The inlet channel and markers are not charted and transit is considered dangerous. Be aware that the current usually reverses in the ICW as it passes the Boca Raton Inlet.
ICW Connection: Connects directly to the ICW at Mile 1048.
- Lat / Lon: N 26° 20.159' / W 080° 04.288'
