FL Inlet Caution: Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet
- Date Reported: Jun 2, 2022
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Overview: Wide, well-marked and protected by jetties, Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet boasts a deep straightforward big ship channel that is one of the easiest to enter on the Atlantic coast. The meandering Gulf Stream is closer here than at any point in the U.S. (sometimes as close as 1 mile offshore but usually out about 8 to 12 miles) and both commercial and recreational craft give the Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet heavy use. It is located approximately midway between Fort Pierce Inlet (53 miles north) and Port Everglades (40 miles south), making it popular with boaters who prefer to travel offshore. Vessels returning from the Bahamas can clear Customs and Immigration here.
Approach: Lake Worth Lighted Buoy "LW" is located at N 26° 46.355'/W 080° 00.602'' (1.1 nm east of the jetties).
Navigation: To access the ocean continue on the ICW around the west side of Peanut Island to the Turning Basin and then pick up the main Lake Worth (Palm Beach) Inlet channel and follow it to the ocean. It is deep and well marked.
Webcam: For a live view of the inlet visit Lake Worth Inlet Webcam.
Cautions & Hazards: The Coast Guard establishes fixed and moving security zones at the Port of Palm Beach for the protection of passenger vessels (cruise ships), vessels carrying cargoes of a particular hazard and vessels carrying hazardous gases. A moving security zone activates when such a vessel passes red and white buoy "LW" when entering the port and becomes a fixed zone when the ship is docked. These zones cover the waters within 100 yards all around the subject vessels and no craft can enter without prior permission. Patrol craft may be contacted on VHF Channel 16 for the status of these security zones.
ICW Connection: Connects directly to the ICW at Mile 1027.

Vessel Type: Sail
LOA: 42'
Draft: 5.0'Lake Worth Inlet to be closed to all vessels on Feb 2nd from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm for installation of dredging pipes.
The estimated time is one hour for the installation of the dredging pipes but a three hour window was requested in case difficulties were encountered. During installation, the pipes will be across the entrance. After installation, the inlet will be reopened but the Coast Guard will enforce a no wake zone.
