NJ: Shark River, SR 71 Bridge, Reduced Horizontal Clearance
- Date Reported: Mar 20, 2025
- Reporter: Ted Stehle
- Source: CG 5th District LNM
- Description:
The New Jersey Department of Transportation, who owns and operates the New Jersey (Route 71) Shark River Bridge, over Shark River, at mile 0.8, at Belmar, NJ, has requested a temporary reduction in the horizontal clearance of the main navigation span from 50 feet to 25 feet to replace the bridge fendering system. Under this temporary reduction to the horizontal clearance, the draw bridge will remain operational, but the main navigational channel horizontal clearance will be reduced from 50 feet to 25 feet from March 21, 2025, to July 25, 2025. Work crews and barges will be working in and around the bridge and the navigation channel Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Vessels able to transit through the bridge with the reduced horizontal clearance may do so at any time. The work crews and barges will be able to clear the navigation span for vessels requiring the full 50 feet of horizontal clearance with at least a one-hour notice. The on-site work team can be contacted via VHF-FM channel 13 or via cell phone at (732) 618-4857. Mariners should adjust their transits accordingly and should use caution when transiting the area.
