FL Inlet Caution: Indian Key Pass
- Date Reported: Aug 2, 2023
- Reporter: Jani Parker
- Source: Waterway Guide Staff
- Description:
Overview: Entrance is about 3.5 nm offshore of flashing green "1" at Indian Key. Twisty dredged channel leads through Indian Key Pass, across Chokoloskee Bay and up the Barron River to a turning basin at Everglades City about 1.3 miles above the mouth of the river.
Approach: Indian Key Pass Channel Light "IK" is located at N 25° 47.997' /W 081° 28.076'.
Navigation: Well-marked Indian Key Pass starts as a natural channel but quickly narrows into a dredged channel. Maintains 6-foot MLW depths but be careful to maintain alignment as the channel is flanked by shoals on both sides. Some markers are lighted but entry in darkness is not recommended.
Cautions & Hazards: Tidal range is approximately 3 feet and "wind tide" can be a factor here in a strong northeast blow. Between the flashing red "22" and the red "30" daybeacon where the channel crosses the Chokoloskee Bay, there is a strong lateral current from the south during the ebb and to the south during the flood. The channel is deep but narrow, and you need to watch the marks ahead and behind as it is easy to drift into 2 to 3 feet of water. Some channel markers may be missing.
- Lat / Lon: N 25° 47.899' / W 081° 27.887'
