NJ: Barnegat Inlet, Shoaling
- Date Reported: May 17, 2023

- Description:
Super sketchy inlet that we ultimately decided to not venture through in our 4 foot draft catamaran. There was a small motor boat that was fishing in the middle of the inlet when we arrived, so there is some water. However…there was obvious shoaling and standing waves all over the center of the channel. There were many different buoys in the area that didn't seem to following the normal pattern and were extremely close together, including two white buoys towards the north end of the inlet. We were traveling north and the next accessible inlet was a good 3 hours away so if you are going to potential attempt this, make sure you have a three hour buffer in case you have to bypass the area. Winds were fairly heavy and we had decent waves which didn't help to navigate either. Perhaps if there is NO wind you could make it through with a shallow draft.

Vessel Type: Power
LOA: 55'
Draft: 0.0'We came into this inlet under distress from high winds and seas. No experience with this inlet. We sent out a call to mariners for local help to maneuver the inlet since it was tough. Coast Guard was more than happy to to lead us through, help us find a marina, and help us plan a way out on our next drive north. Made a real bad situation a good one.

Vessel Type: Power
LOA: 30'
Draft: 4.0'The markers outside the inlet,#3 and #4 will lead you over the shallowest part of the Bar. The Coast Guard will not move them to a safe place because that station is the training station on the East Coast for the 47ft rollover boats. There are three of them at the Station. The way in the inlet is from the Northeast outside of marker 6, which marks the end of a submerged jetty. The 2 white markers are danger buoys which try to keep boaters off the jetty.
