NC: Frying Pan Shoals, slough is navigable with caution
- Date Reported: Jan 21, 2020
- Reporter: Paul Castaldi
- Source: User
- Description:
We were heading North, staying outside, going from Georgetown to Wrightsville Beach. Rather than duck into the waterway at Cape Fear we decided to stay outside until the Masonboro Inlet. Rather than go all the way around the shoals we followed the buoys through the slough. It is well marked and had plenty of water. Do not go outside of the marked cut! It saves going way around the shoals.

Vessel Type: Power
LOA: 82'
Draft: 6.0'The "channel" is just two buoys, but heading West to East you can pass through and head almost straight to the safe water mark. 30+ ft most of the way through, charts were pretty spot on too.

Draft: 4.9'The cut through at Frying Pan Shoals is well marked and deep. We sailed through on November 13, 2022 daytime with no issues - 15+ knots true wind speed and 1 meter waves

Vessel Type: Power
LOA: 40'
Draft: 5.0'Agreed. The slough is well marked but be aware if you are making the run from Charleston City Marina to Morehead City, NC it's a full 215 nms. Make sure you have enough daylight and fuel to take on this leg. If the weather turns which its famous to do your cutoff options may not be safe. Taken three times in November 2021.
